HISTORY
The Vu family was one of the very first families that cultivated teas in the region. Our story with tea began after the World War I ended, when the Vietnamese soldiers who were part of French coalition returned to their home country. At that time, French government let foreign soldiers from their colonisations fought along side with French soldiers and Vietnamese soldiers was part of this army. In order to reward their contribution during the war, the local French authorities gave them land and title. There was one guy named Hiet Vu, he was deployed to a small hill and mountain region called Tan Cuong (a small commune of Thai Nguyen nowadays). The land consists most of hill sides, therefore rice fields were rarely seen in the region and the people were living in extremely poor conditions. As a local official, Hiet thought that is his responsibility to improve the living condition for his people. Around that time, French tea manufacturers invested a lot of tea plantations in a nearby region called Phu Tho. Most of the processed tea was exported to Western Europe and other French colonisations. Hiet believed his land has similar conditions as Phu Tho and growing tea could be the only way for his people to escape from poverty. He went to Phu Tho and stayed there for months in order to acquire all the knowledge and techniques needed for cultivating and processing tea. After his long trip, Hiet brought back some of the best tea varieties from Phu Tho and experimentally grow them in his hometown soil. Fortunately, the tea was surprisingly habituated to the new environment and adding more his surprise, the quality of processed loose leaf tea was superb, even better that its origin in Phu Tho. Satisfy with this new discovery, Hiet provided training and young tea trees to the local farmers, therefore anybody in the region can cultivate the tea by themselves. His teas even won a national tea competition consecutively for many years. Due to his legacy, Vietnamese tea drinker still refer Thai Nguyen as the best green tea region of the country until this day.
