Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA) is one of the first national-level development areas. The electronics industry is one of the pillar industries of TEDA. At the end of 2011, the output of electronics industry is $25 billion, about 25.2 percent of the total industrial output value. TEDA has 129 foreign founded enterprises, total investment of over $7.61 billion, and foreign contracts of over $5.43 billion.

The advantageous products of TEDA in the electronics industry include mobile phones, LCD monitors, digital cameras, digital video devices and those products grow rapidly. Until the end of 2010, TEDA has sited 12 national level R&D institutions, two national-level enterprise technical centers, 22 Tianjin state-level technical centers and 20 Tianjin state-level engineering R&D institutions. The goal of TEDA is to build the base of manufacturing and R&D transformation in northern and even the whole China in communication, computer, peripheral, consumer electronics, new components and optoelectronic display and lighting industries. The scale of TEDA in the electronics industry is estimated to over $40 billion in 2015, with an annual growth rate of about 12 percent. TEDA is willing to set two product groups with an output of over $8 billion.

TEDA is willing to keep the proportion of electronics over TEDA industrial in 25 percent, over Tianjin Electronic information industry in 90 percent. The innovation goals in 2015 are:

  • Establishment of 20 new R&D centers or theological centers
  • R&D expenditures shall be over five percent of GDP
  • Production capacity for high-tech items will be improved by over 70 percent
  • Over 50 percent of electronics companies will be identified as high-tech enterprises.
