DEscriptION
Polyestersuture is a nonabsorbable, braided, sterile, surgical suturecomposed of Poly (ethyleneterephthalate). It is prepared from fibers of high molecularweight, long-chain, linear polyesters having recurrent aromaticrings as an integral component. Polyester suturesare braided for optimal handlingproperties, and for good visibility in the surgical field, aredyed green.
INDICATIONS
Polyester suture is indicated for use in general soft tissue approximationand/or ligation, including use in cardiovascular, ophthalmic andneurological procedures.
ACTIONS
Polyester suture elicits a minimalacute inflammatory reaction in tissue, followed by agradual encapsulation of thesuture by fibrous connective tissue. Implantation studies inanimals show no meaningfuldecline in polyester suture strength over time. The polyester fibersuture material ispharmacologically inactive.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Noneknown.
WARNINGS
Users should be familiar with surgicalprocedures and techniques involving nonabsorbablesutures before employingPloyester suture for wound closure, as risk of wounddehiscence may vary withthe site of application and the suture material used.Do notresterilize. Discard opened packages and unused sutures. As with anyforeign body, prolonged contact of any suture with salt solutions, such as thosefound in the urinary or biliary tracts, may result incalculus formation. Acceptable surgical practice should be followed for themanagement of infected or contaminated wounds.
PRECAUTIONS
Inhandling this or any other suture material, care should be taken toavoid damage from handling. Avoid crushing or crimping damagedue to application of surgical instruments such asforceps or needle holders. Theuse of additional throws is particularly appropriate whenknotting monofilamentsutures. As with any suture material, adequate knot securityrequires the accepted surgical technique of flat and square ties, with additional throwsas warranted by surgical circumstance and the experience of the surgeon. To avoid damagingneedle points and swage areas, grasp the needle in an areaone-third (1/3) to one-half (1/2) of the distance from the swagedend to the point. Reshaping needles may cause them to lose strength and be less resistantto bending and breaking. Users should exercise cautionwhen handling surgical needles toavoid inadvertent needle sticks. Discard used needles in"sharps"containers.
ADVERSE REACTIONS
Adverse effects associated with the use ofthis device include wound dehiscence, calcul information in urinaryand biliary tracts when prolonged contact with salt solutions suchas urine and bile occurs, infection, minimal acute inflammatory tissue reaction andtransitory local irritation at the wound site. Broken needlesmay result in extended or additional surgeries orresidual foreign bodies.Inadvertent needle sticks with contaminated surgical needles mayresult in the transmissionof bloodborne pathogens.
