Orthopediccasting tape is composed by manifold layers of special madefiberglass, which was soaked by polyurethane. Polyurethane materialis one kind of block copolymer which contains soft segment and itis characterize by better viscosity, fast drying time, highrigidness and light weight. Dure to better biocompatibility,polyurethane is widely used in medical fields. How to use castingtape:
1) Put thepad (cotton coil or cotton slipcover) on the surgeryposition.
2) Wearsurgical gloves.
3) Selectproper specification according to the surgery position.
4) Immersethe roll in room temperature water(21-24°C) for 4-6 seconds andsqueeze it 2-3 times firmly. If the water warmer than 21-24°Cshortens the immersing time, while cooler than 21-24°C waterlengthens the time.
5) Enwindspirally; Overlapping the previous layer by one-half or two-thirdsof the roll width. To maintain proper tension is very important andtake care to avoid excessive tightness. The strength can bedetermined by the number of layers used. Just 3-4 layers provide astring non-weigh-bearing cast and 5-6 layers are typically adequatefor weight-bearing cast.
6) Additionalafter the initial enwinding should be overlapped on itself toachieve good molding. Enwind the roll in 3-5 minutes afterimmersing in water because after that time it will beconcretion.
7) Smooth andrub the surface to achieve good contact between layers. Keepingsmoothness helps mold the wrap.
Allow about10 minutes for sufficient concretion and let patients not moveduring this time. It could bear electric weight after 20minutes.
8) It couldbe windowed, trimmed or removed with traditional cast sawequipment.
