Product Origins: OHI Ginkgo Biloba Extractsare extracted from the leaves of the Ginkgo Biloba tree dating fromthe Palaeozoic era (350 million years ago). The Ginkgo Biloba tree,which is notable for high resistance to both pollutants and pests,has a long tradition of use in Oriental medicine; in particular forthe treatment and control of respiratory and circulatory ailmentsand for brain function.
Among the pharmacological active constituentsthose compounds with great importance are the flavonoids (ginkgoflavonol glycosides) and the terpene trilactones (ginkgolides andbilobalide). Different kind of flavonoids has been isolated fromthe ginkgo extracts.
What''s It Made Of?
More than 40 components isolated from theginkgo tree have been identified, but only two are believed to beresponsible for the herb''s beneficial effects in humans --flavonoids and terpenoids. Flavonoids (such as quercetin and rutin)have potent antioxidant effects.
Laboratory and animal studies have shown thatflavonoids protect the nerves, heart muscle, blood vessels, andretina from damage. Terpenoids (such as ginkgolides) improve bloodflow by dilating blood vessels and reducing the stickiness ofplatelets.
