Huperzine A, is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene alkaloidcompound found in the plant firmoss Huperzia serrata.Huperzine A is an Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor similar to othercompounds donepezil, rivastigmine, and galantamine.
In the US, Huperzine A is sold as a dietary supplement for memorysupport. The botanical has been used in China for centuries for thetreatment of swelling, fever and blood disorders. Clinical trialsin China has shown it to be effective in the treatment ofAlzheimer''s disease, and has been shown to enhance memory inhealthy young students in one study. Physiological Applications
1) Traditional/Ethnobotanical uses
The club moss H. serrata has been used in Chinese folk medicineunder the name Qian Ceng Ta (Chien Tseng Ta), for the treatment ofbruises, strains, swelling, and fevers. It also has been used forschizophrenia.
2) Alzheimer disease
Huperzine A is being studied for potential use in treatingAlzheimer disease. Human clinical studies of huperzine A forAlzheimer disease have been conducted only in China. Clinicalstudies of patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer disease foundthat huperzine A improved cognitive function, activity of dailylife, and noncognitive disorders. In one study of mild to moderateAlzheimer disease patients, huperzine A was found to improvecognitive function, activity of daily life, and noncognitivedisorders in a 12-week period compared with placebo. Because ofpossible activities in the
brain, huperzine A also is being considered for potential use inpreventing nerve gas poisoning. There are no clinical studies todate to verify its effectiveness in nerve gas poisoning. Moreclinical studies are needed to document the health benefits ofhuperzine A.
