What isEugenil:
Eugenol is aphenylpropene, an allyl chain-substituted guaiacol. Eugenol is amember of the phenylpropanoids class of chemical compounds. It is aclear to pale yellow oily liquid extracted from certain essentialoils especially from clove oil, nutmeg, cinnamon, basil and bayleaf. It is slightly soluble in water and soluble in organicsolvents. It has a spicy, clove-likearoma.
Eugenol isused in perfumeries, flavorings, essential oils and in medicine asa local antiseptic and anesthetic.It is a key ingredient inIndonesian kretek (clove) cigarettes. It was used in the productionof isoeugenol for the manufacture of vanillin, though most vanillinis now produced from phenol or fromlignin.
