PLANTDEscriptION
- Guggul is the yellowish resin (or gum) thatis produced by Commiphora mukul, a small, thorny plant that growsthroughout northern India. Its active components, Z-guggulsteroneand E-guggulsterone, have an ability to lower both cholesterol andtriglyceride levels. Specifically, guggulipid lowers VLDL and LDLcholesterol and triglycerides while simultaneously raising HDLcholesterol. This indicates guggul''s primary use for providingprotection against atherosclerosis. These effects are due toguggul''s action on the liver which is stimulated to metabolise LDLcholesterol, effectively lowering the amount in thebloodstream.
- Native to India, Guggullipid has been used for a long time in Ayurvedic medicine to treatobesity and other weight related problems. Today, Guggul isfrequently used to help lower cholesterol levels and decrease highblood pressure.
Uses:
- In chemical composition guggulu (extractedresin) consist of octanordammarana terpenes manusumbionic acid andmanusumbinone as obtained from chemicalanalysis.
- One of the main uses of Guggul is treatmentof high cholesterol. Gum Guggul both lowered cholesterollevels and also separately protected against the development ofhardening of the arteries. Guggul can improve cholesterollevels. Gum Guggul is said to help reduce high cholesterol, because it lowers harmful low-density lipoproteins while elevatingthe beneficial high-densitylipoproteins.
- Guggul may lower serum cholesterol levels byas much as 24%, and triglyceride levels by as much as 23%, byincreasing the hepatic binding of LDL cholesterol. Its effects onHDL cholesterol levels are variable, either increasing ordecreasing.
- A small controlled trial compared oralgugulipid against tetracycline for the treatment of acne andreported equivalent results.
- Guggul is also widely promoted as a weightloss agent.
- Helps prevent blood platelet aggregation andbreak up already-formed blood clots. Thus, this activity canhelp prevent heart disease and stroke. Guggul lipids have been thesubject of several scientific studies, the results of which havebeen extremely encouraging as to the product''s nutritional valueto the circulatory system.
- It is a heart tonic that strengthens theheart.
- Guggulsterone stimulates the thyroid gland, has anti-inflammatory properties, and protects against myocardialnecrosis resulting from drugtoxicity.
- It helps in lowering in blood pressurelevels and helps in maintaining it to normallevels.
