Constituents
Analysis has shown a brown, resinous, acrid substance, insoluble inpotassium hydroxide and probably containing pelletonin, two oilssoluble in potassium hydroxide - one dark brown and acrid, theother yellow - tannin, gum, potassium sulphate and carbonate,potassium chloride, calcium phosphate and carbonate, silica,alumina, lignin, etc.

The roots contain anacyclin1.

Indications
They have a slight aromatic smell and a persistent, pungent taste,exciting a remarkable flow of saliva. It possesses stimulant andrubifacient properties.

An alkaloid, Pyrethrine, yielding pyrethric acid, is stated to bethe active principle.

Medicinal Action and Uses
Pellitory root is widely used because of its pungent efficacy inrelieving toothache and in promoting a free flow of saliva. TheBritish Pharmacopoeia directs that it be used as a masticatory, andin the form of lozenges for its reflex action on the salivaryglands in dryness of the mouth and throat. The tincture made fromthe dried root may be applied to relieve the aching of a decayedtooth, applied on cotton wool, or rubbed on the gums, and for thispurpose may with advantage be mixed with camphorated chloroform. Itforms an addition to many dentifrices.
