Introduction
Ginkgo Biloba Extract contain flavonoid glycosides (myricetinand quercetin) and terpenoids (ginkgolides, bilobalides). Theseextracts are shown to exhibit reversible, nonselective monoamineoxidase inhibition, as well as inhibition of reuptake at theserotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine transporters, with all butthe norepinephrine reuptake inhibition fading in chronic exposure.Ginkgo extract has in addition been found to act as a selective5-HT1A receptor agonist in vivo. In 2010, a meta-analysis ofclinical trials has shown Ginkgo to be moderately effective inimproving cognition in dementia patients but not preventing theonset of Alzheimer's disease in people without dementia.
