Description:
Bupleurumgrows in China and is cultivated throughout the central and easternparts of that country. Bupleurum is also found in other parts ofAsia and in Europe. Bupleurum is propagated from seed in spring orby root division in autumn and requires well-drained soil andplenty of sun. The root is unearthed in spring and autumn.Distribution mainly in Chinese provinces such as Gansu, Hebei,Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang, Henan and Shaanxi.
Actions
Used in the treatment ofchronic hepatitis, enlarged liver or spleen, chemical liver damage,liver stasis or liver congestion, depression, and irregularmenstruation. Bupleurum is cited as an herb that increases proteinsynthesis
in the liver, and reducesinflammation by inhibiting prostaglandinproduction.
PHARMACOLOGY:
1. Numerouscomponents of bupleurum root have shown anti-inflammatory activityin a wide variety of animal models;
2. Bupleurum root extracts protected rat livers from chemicalinsults, leading researchers to conclude that members of thisspecies, have potential as broad spectrum antiphepatic agants;
3. Bupleurum root saponins, like other saponin-rich herbs, showpotent heart and blood vessel protective effects. They have beenshown to inhibit the formation of lipid peroxides in the cardiacmuscle or in the liver, influence the function of enzymes containedin them. Decrease blood coagulation, cholesterol and sugar levelsin blood, stimulate the immunity system;
4. Researchers have also determined that bupleurum root enhancesmacrophage cell activity.
