Valerian is used against sleeping disorders, restlessness andanxiety, and as a muscle relaxant. Valerian often seems only towork when taken over longer periods (several weeks), though manyusers find that it takes effect immediately. Some studies havedemonstrated that valerian extracts interact with theGABA(Gamma-aminobutyric acid) and benzodiazepine receptors.
Valerian is also used traditionally to treat gastrointestinal painand irritable bowel syndrome.
