Dioscorea opposita(Dioscorea batatas, nagaimo, Chinese yam, Korean yam) is a type ofyam (Dioscorea) that may be eaten raw. The tuber of wild yam isalso used (often in dried form) in traditional Chinese medicine andChinese herbology.

Radix Dioscoreaeoppositae, falls within the Chinese herbal medicine category ofTonify Qi materia medica. Within this category it has specializedand important properties which make it one of the most importantand commonly used materia medica in the Chinese medicinerepertoire. As a tonifying herb which enters the kidney organ(Zang) and/or channel (Jing), its role is fundamental, inaccordance with the dictum that "the kidney is the root of Yin andYang of all the organs (Zang-fu). Shanyao is classified as being ofneutral temperature, an important property which means that, whileit significantly tonifies the Qi, it does not at the same timecause Heat; in this way it is able to tonify Qi without injuringthe Yin, an important advantage in the treatment of patients withdeficient Yin. In combination with bitter melon, Chinese yam hasbeen shown to contribute to weight loss. Over a period of 23 weeks,those eating the diet containing Chinese yam lost 7kilos.
