Description:

Paraffin gauze dressing consists of a leno-weave fabric ofcotton or cotton and viscose, which has been impregnated withyellow soft paraffin. The dressing is used as a primary woundcontact layer and the paraffin is present to reduce the adherenceof the product to the surface of a granulating wound. Twoformulations of Paraffin Gauze Dressing are described in theBritish Pharmacopoeia: they differ in the weight of paraffin basepresent on the gauze.

Indications:

Paraffin gauze dressing is used as a primary wound contact layerin the treatment of burns, ulcers, skin grafts (both donor andreceptor sites), and a variety of traumatic injuries.

Contra-indications:

Although there are no absolute contra-indications to the use ofparaffin gauze dressing, if the dressing is placed upon a heavilyexuding wound its semi-occlusive nature may cause tissue macerationby preventing the free movement of exudates away from the surfaceof the wound. This is less likely to occur than if a dressingbearing the higher loading of paraffin were to be used.

Method of use:

Paraffin gauze dressing is applied directly to the surface ofthe wound and covered with an absorbent pad held in place with tapeor a bandage, as appropriate.

Frequency of Change:

The frequency of dressings changes will depend entirely upon thenature of the wound. If paraffin gauze dressing is left in positionfor prolonged periods of time, it can become adherent and causetissue damage upon removal.

Pack Shot paraffin gauze is presented individually wrapped in apaper/Aluminum pouch, sterilized by irradiation.

Storage:

Paraffin gauze dressing should be stored in a cool place.
