Ultrasonicsystems allow to cut and weld the edge of fabric in one singleoperation. Itis based on the piezoelectric principle, to transform an electricalsignal in mechanical vibration.
Four elements are needed:
- An ultrasonic generator to control and provide energy tothe ultrasonic head.
- A mechanical unit composedwith a Converter, aBooster and a Sonotrode / Horn, to perform the cuttingsealing operations
- The utlrasonic generatorconverts the power supply (100-250Volts, 50-60 Hz) into a 20 to 30 kHz, 800-1000 Voltselectrical signal. This signal is applied to piezo-electricalceramics (included in the converter) that will convert this signalinto mechanical oscillations
- These oscillations will beamplified by the booster and converter, thus creating a hammer. Theconverter converts electricity into high frequency mechanicalvibration. The active elements are usually piezoelectrics ceramics.The booster (optional) serves as an amplitude transformer.Amplitude magnification or reduction is achieved by certain designfeatures or the geometrical shape of the booster.
- The sonotrode, or horn, isthe active part of the ultrasonic unit. It is in contact with thefabric and acts as a hammer against the counter-tool. This systemwill enable to melt the fibers within the fabric by mechanicalaction only (hammering), enabling to obtain a very clean andflexible melting without any burning or color change. The sonotrodeand counter-tool design will be adapted to the operation to beperformed.
