What isPaulownia
Paulownia isa pale yellow to honey coloured timber with a low density of260-290 kg/m3 at 11% moisture. It is relatively strong for itsweight and is highly resistant to warping and cracking. Paulowniais easy to plane, saw, mould, turn and carve. It readilyabsorbs adhesives, stains, oils and varnishes. It is moretermite resistant than jarrah and pine. Our plantation isfarmed and the tree trunks are constantly pruned to remove lowerbranches. This process reduces the number and size of theknots in the timber. Paulownia is not a structural gradetimber and as such is unsuitable for some purposes. Testsby the University of Southern Queensland of Western Red Cedar andPaulownia showed that Paulownia had better compression and shearqualities. When this is coupled with the comparative densityat 11% moisture of 275Kg/m3 for Paulownia and 450Kg/m3 for WesternRed Cedar it makes Paulownia lighter but stronger
