Pillowblock bearings, the most commonly used type of mounted units, aredesigned to provide shaft support where the mounting surface isparallel to the shaft axis. The bolt holes are usually slotted foradjustment during mounting. Pillow blocks are supplied in a varietyof configurations. Pressed steel pillow block bearings are alsoavailable for light-duty applications.
Pillow blocks are usuallyreferred to the housings which have a bearing fitted into them& thus the user need not purchase the bearings separately.Pillow blocks are usually mounted in cleaner environments &generally are meant for lesser loads of general industry. Thesediffer from "plummer blocks" which are bearing housings suppliedwithout any bearings & are usually meant for higher loadratings & corrosive industrial environments. However the termspillow-block & plummer-block are used interchangeably incertain parts of the world.

Pillowblock bearings are widely used in mining, machinery, automotive,textile and chenmical industries.
Depending onthe type, the following methods of fitting to theshaft are employed:
(1) theinner ring is fastened onto the shaft in two places by setscrews.
(2) theinner ring has a tapered bore and is fitted to the shaft by meansof an adapter.
(3) In theeccentric locking collar system the inner ring is fastened to theshaft by means of eccentric grooves provided atthe side of the inner ring and on the collar.
