Bergamot oil is made froma tree that can grow up to four meters high, with star-shapedflowers and smooth leaves, bearing citrus fruit resembling a crossbetween an orange and a grapefruit, but in a pear-shape. The fruitripens from green to yellow.
The oil is one of themost widely used in the perfumery and toiletry industry and forms,together with neroli and lavender, the main ingredient for theclassical 4711 Eau-de-cologne fragrance. It is used to flavor EarlGrey tea.
The name is derived fromthe city Bergamo in Lombardy, Italy, where the oil was firstsold.
Bergamot oil can causeburns when used on a sensitive skin which is then exposed tosunlight, as the high content of bergaptene can causephoto-toxicity. It is advisable to keep out of the sun if this oilis used on the skin.
Even when the ingredientBergaptene (Furocoumarin) is removed from the oil and phototoxicity is therefore minimized, it is still advisable to keeptreated skin out of the sun, and to use it in concentrations ofless than 1 %.
Bergamot oil can be usedin the treatment of depression, stress, tension, fear, hysteria,infection (all types including skin), anorexia, psoriasis, eczemaand general convalescence.
