Ylang ylang (pronounced EE-lang EE-lang) is a tropical tree nativeto Asia, or the flower of the tree and the essential oil producedfrom the flowers. The tree is the Cananga odorata, and the oil isextensively used in making perfumes and in aromatherapy.
In parts of the Pacific Rim, ylang ylang is associated withweddings and honeymoons. The scent of the flowers is heavy andsweet, similar to jasmine. The essential oil is extracted throughsteam distillation, and ylang ylang essential oil comes in threegrades, depending on when in the distillation process the oil wasremoved. The lengthier the distillation, the heavier the scent ofthe oil, so ylang ylang III, the third extraction, has more scentthan ylang ylang I or II. All grades of ylang ylang essential oilhave a fairly heavy scent compared to lighter scented oils, so theyshould be added carefully to a blend; ylang ylang can easilyoverpower less exuberant scents.
The scent of ylang ylang, like jasmine and rose, has long beenconsidered an aphrodisiac. This may account for its popularity inperfume blends. Of course, the so-called aphrodisiac scents alsosimply smell wonderful, which may be why they are attractive to theopposite sex. In aromatherapy, ylang ylang is used for itsstress-relieving properties--a few drops of ylang ylang oil in ahot bath can melt the day''s cares quickly away. Some people findthe scent overpowering, however, and it may cause headaches inpeople sensitive to heavy floral scents.
Ylang ylang is also thought to reduce anxiety and perhaps evenrelieve depression. Sexual dysfunction or simple lack of interestmight be addressed with a judicious use of ylang ylang oil in anaromalamp or blended in a massage oil. Use in perfume recipes thatcall for jasmine, if your budget cannot support the purchase of themuch more costly jasmine essential oil.
