Lavandin a hybrid plant developed by crossing true lavender withspike lavender or aspic. Its flowers may be blue like true lavenderor greyish like aspic. Essential oil extracted throughsteam distillation from the fresh and flowering tops.Commonly grown in France, it dates from the 1820s. A specificcultivar of lavandin known as Abrialii or Abrial or Abrialis formedthe basis of the French lavender industry from 1935 to the 1970s.However this variety was susceptible to disease from a pathogenicmicro-organism. The disease cut the plant life from around eight toten years to three or four. In 1972 Abrialii was replacedby Grosso and since 1975 Grosso has been the dominantcultivar. Also in use today is the variety Super discovered in thefoothills of the Alps.
Uses -
Lavandin essential oil, Lavandin hybrida,seems to have properties that combine those of the true Lavandinand the aspic. It has aromatic, carminative andnervine properties. Though largely used in perfumery, it is now notmuch employed internally, except as a flavouringagent, occurring occasionally in pharmacy to coverdisagreeable odors in ointments and other compounds. Theessential oil, proves admirably restorative andtonic against faintness, palpitations of a nervous sort, weakgiddiness, spasms and colic. It is agreeable to the taste andsmell, provokes appetite, raises the spirits and dispelsflatulence..
Lavandin essential oil, Lavandinhybrida, blends well with the following essentialoils: clove, bay leaf, cinnamon, pine, clary sage, thyme, rosemaryand citrus oils, especially bergamot and lime.
