It is colorless liquid that has apleasant aromatic odor; upon exposure to air it turns dark brown orblack. It boils at about 160°C. It is commonly used as a solvent;it is soluble in ethanol and ether and somewhat soluble in water.Furfural is the aldehyde of pyromucic acid; it has propertiessimilar to those of benzaldehyde. A derivative of furan, it isprepared commercially by dehydration of pentose sugars obtainedfrom cornstalks and corncobs, husks of oat and peanut, and otherwaste products. It is used in the manufacture of pesticides, phenolfurfural resins, and tetrahydrofuran. Tetrahydrofuran is used as acommercial solvent and is converted in starting materials for thepreparation of nylon.

Uses:
(1) Furfural is used as a solventin petrochemical refining to extract dienes (which are used to makesynthetic rubber) from other hydrocarbons. Furfural, as well as itsderivative furfuryl alcohol, can be used either by themselves or intogether with phenol, acetone, or urea to make solid resins. Suchresins are used in making fiberglass, some aircraft components, andautomotive brakes.
(2) Furfural is also used as achemical intermediate in the production of the solvents furan andtetrahydrofuran. Hydroxymethyl furfural has been identified in awide variety of heat processed foods.
(3) It can be used lubricating oilrefining, furfuryl alcohol production by hydrogenation, makingseveral organic chemical products, such as medicine pesticide. Itis utilized as a solvent in petroleum industry. It can be used toproduce meleic andydride, tertahydrofuran, furan resin and furfurylalcohol resin. It is also widely use in food spicery and dye asantiseptic, disinfector, insecticide and rust remover.
