Forging
Heat to 1150 oC and hold until temperature is uniform throughoutthe section. Soaking time at forging temperature should be as shortas possible to avoid heavy scaling and excessive grain growth. Thiswill vary depending on furnace conditions but 15 minutes per 25 mmof section may be used as a guide.Do not forge below 850 oC.
Following completion of forging operation, work piece should becooled as slowly as possible in sand or dry lime etc.
Note: Case hardening steels due to their low carbon content areless susceptible to cracking than medium or high carbon steels, andmay therefore be heated and cooled more rapidly.
Machining
8620 in the as rolled as supplied condition, has very goodmachinability and all operations such as turning, drilling, millingand tapping etc. can be carried out satisfactorily as per machinemanufacturers recommendations for suitable tool type - feeds andspeeds.
Welding
8620 is readily weldable in the as rolled as supplied condition.Following welding, the work piece immediately upon cooling to handwarm should be stress relieved at 630 oC - 650 oC if possible.
N.B. Welding in the carburized and heat treated condition is notrecommended.
Welding Procedure
Welding of 8620 should always be carried out using low hydrogenelectrodes - please consult your welding consumables supplier.

Grade 309s Stainless Steel is used often for higher temperatureapplications. While its oxidation resistance surpasses that ofalloy 310, its resistance to corrosion is equivalent to that ofalloy 310. Alloy 309s is highly weldable and cold formable,although it does require stronger forming machines and continuouslyincreasing pressure. Typical machining methods are used forstainless steel grade 309s, but it is tougher and does tend toharden more quickly. Like 310 Stainless Steel, Grade 309s StainlessSteel has a high chromium and nickel content which grants excellentresistance to aqueous corrosion.
