Resistance welded at every cross section,welded wire mesh has several advantages over woven wire mesh. It ismuch more rigid than woven wire screen because it is locked inplace at every intersection by a resistance weld. This makes itideal when there is a lot of shearing or cutting to be done or whenmanufacturing products that require high rigidity. By welding thewires together (instead of weaving them) the material can holdit''s shape without supports, allowing shearing, rolling, andframing to be done with relative ease! The end wires will not frayoff the way they do with woven wire mesh because all the wires arelocked in place by a weld. Industrial applications such as cagebuilding, machine guarding, and wire displays are a few places oneis likely to find welded wire mesh.
Welded wire mesh is primarily available in lowcarbon steel (plain steel), stainless steel alloys and galvanizedsteel. Due to high electrical conductivity welded wire mesh is notavailable in aluminum, copper, and other highly electricalconductive metals and alloys.Welded wire mesh has been manufactured now foralmost a century. As manufacturing processes have become faster andmore economical, the use of welded wire mesh has become morewidespread and has replaced woven wire mesh in manyapplications.
