Ferrite cores are used in electronic inductors, transformers,and electromagnets where the high electrical resistance of theferrite leads to very low eddy current losses. They are commonlyseen as a lump in a computer cable, called a ferrite bead, whichhelps to prevent high frequency electrical noise (radio frequencyinterference) from exiting or entering the equipment.
Ferrites are produced by heating an intimate mixture of powderedprecursors pressed into a mold. During the heating process,calcination of carbonates occurs:
MCO3 -----> MO CO2
Ferrites are usually non-conductive ferrimagnetic ceramic compoundsderived from iron oxides such as hematite (Fe2O3) or magnetite(Fe3O4) as well as oxides of other metals. Ferrites are, like mostother ceramics, hard and brittle. In terms of their magneticproperties, the different ferrites are often classified as "soft"or "hard", which refers to their low or high magneticcoercivity.
Due to their low cost, Ferrite magnets enjoy a very wide range ofapplications, from motors, loudspeakers, toys and crafts, etc. Theyare the most widely used magnetic material today. However, They arevery hard, brittle and limited to simple size. The mould charge isvey expensive too. This class of magnets have lower energycharacteristics compared to other magnetic materials.
