Characteristics:

Sodium persulfate is a white, crystalline, odourless salt. It isused as initiator for the polymerisation of monomers and as astrong oxidizing agent in many application. It has the particularadvantage of being almost non-hygroscopic, of having a particularlygood storage stability as a result of its extremely high purity andof being easy and safe to handle.

Storage and Handling:

SPS is not combustible but assists combustion of combustiblematerials due to release of oxygen. Provided it is stored underapproriate condition. It must be stored dry in closed containersand protected from direct sunlight, heat and humidity. Impuritiessuch as dirt, rust or traces of metal and reductants may causecatalytic decomposition. The product as supplied or in solutionneeds to be handled with appropriate care. The eye, skin andclothes must be protected when working with SPS. SPS as damp powderor aqueous solution has a bleaching and slightly corrodingeffect.

Application of SPS:

SPS is a suitable initiaor for the emulsion or solutionpolymerisation of acrylic monomers, vinyl acetate, vinyl chlorideetc. and for the emulsion copolymerisation of styrene,acrylonitrile, butadiene etc..  SPS is also a kind ofoxidizing agent:

(1) Used in cleaning and pickling of metal surfaces.

(2) Used in accelerated curing of low formaldehydeadhesives.

(3) Used in modification of starch, production of binders andcoating materials.

(4) Desizing agent and bleach activator.

(5) An essential component of bleaching formulations for haircosmetics.
