Amitraz (development code BTS27419)is a non-systemic acaricide andinsecticide.It was first synthesized bythe Boots Co. in England in 1969.Amitraz has been found tohave an insect repellent effect, works as aninsecticideandalso as a pesticide synergist.It''s effectiveness is tracedback on alpha-adrenergic agonist activity, interaction withoctopamine receptors of the central nervous systemand inhibition of monoamine oxidases andprostaglandinsynthesis.Therefore it leads tooverexcitation and consequently paralysis and death in insects.Because amitraz is less harmful to mammals, amitraz is among manyother purposes best known as insecticide against mite- ortick-infestation of dogs.
