Calciumcarbide is  one of the basic raw material of organic synthesisindustry.It is also an important raw material of acetyleneindustry.
(1)The reaction of calciumcarbide with water, producing acetylene and calciumhydroxide.
    This reaction was the basis of the industrialmanufacture of acetylene, and is the major industrial use ofcalcium carbide.
    eg.synthetize rubber,syntheticresin,acetone,ketene and carbon blace.Meanwhile oxygen-acetyleneflame is widely used in metal welding andcutting.
(2)Heating powdered calciumcarbide and nitrogen to producing calcium cyanamide,which can reactwith sodium chloride producing black cyanide.
    black cyanide is used in gold mining andnon-ferrous metal industry.
(3)Steelmaking:as a powerfuldeoxidizer at ladle treatment facilities.
(4)Calcium carbide is used incarbide lamps, in which water drips on the carbide and theacetylene formed is ignited. 
(5)In the ripening offruit,calcium carbide is sometimes used as source of acetylene gas,which is a ripening agent similar to ethylene.
