A concrete pump is a machine used fortransferring liquid concrete by pumping. There are two types ofconcrete pumps.

The first type of concrete pump is attached to a truck. It is known as atrailer-mounted boom concrete pump because it usesa remote-controlledarticulating robotic arm (calleda boom) to place concrete with pinpoint accuracy.Boom pumps are used on most of the larger construction projects asthey are capable of pumping at very high volumes andbecause of the labour saving nature of the placing boom. They are arevolutionary alternative to truck-mounted concrete pumps.

The second main type of concretepump is either mounted on a truck and known as a truck-mountedconcrete pump or placed on a trailer, and it is commonlyreferred to as a line pump or trailer-mountedconcrete pump. This pumprequires steel or flexible concreteplacing hoses to be manually attached to the outlet ofthe machine. Those hoses are linked together and lead to whereverthe concrete needs to be placed. Line pumps normally pump concreteat lower volumes than boom pumps and are used for smaller volumeconcrete placing applications such as swimmingpools, sidewalks, and single family home concrete slabs andmost ground slabs.

There are also skidmounted and rail mounted concrete pumps, but these areuncommon and only used on specialized jobsites suchas mines and tunnels.
