Classification of surge arresters:

Distribution arresters: The distribution arresters are used for the protection of equipment such as distribution transformer, switch cabinet, box type transformer, cable terminal and less-oil pole switch against damage from atmospheric over-voltage and switching over-voltage.

Station arresters: The station arresters are used for protecting A. C electrical equipment or power plant and substation against damage from the atmospheric over-voltage and the swithching over-voltage.

Transmission line arresters: The transmission line surge arresters are the major protective apparatus used for preventing transmission line from being struck by lightning.
