UHMWPE fiber also known as high modulus polyethylene (HMPE) or High performance polyethylene (HPPE) is a thermoplastic which has extremely long chains andhigh molecular weight, resulting in a very tough material, with the highest impact strength of any thermoplastic presently made. It is highly resistant to corrosive chemicals, extremely low moistureabsorption, extremely low coefficient of frication, self lubricating and highly resistant to abrasion, and has much longer usage lifecycle.
Its coefficient of friction is significantlylower than that of nylon and acetal, and is comparable to teflon, but UHMWPE has better abrasion resistance than teflon. It is odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic. This gives a strength/weight ratio as much as 15 times stronger than steel and up to 40% stronger than Aramid.
