XLPE, Cross-linked polyethylene, has stable intermolecular bondsbetween polyethylene particles created by thermochemical action,due to the presence of organic peroxide.

XLPE has the same electric properties as the conventionalpolyethylene and, as a result of stable intermolecular bonds, hasmuch better thermal and mechanical properties. This provides XLPEinsulation cables to be used at maximum continuous conductorstemperature of 90 degree cetigrade while conventional polyethyleneinsulation cable to be used at that of 75degree cetigrade. Thisprovides an important advantage in cable ratings and is of specialsignificance in countries or situations where the ambienttemperature is high and derating factors have to be applied.
