The Penobscot 17'.

The very classically designed Penobscot 17' (5.1metres) is of modern glued lapstrake construction with marine plywood over stringers fore and aft. It is a powerful and safe construction method delivering a long lasting boat of high quality. The long lines and lean looks of the Penobscot 17' make for a very attractive and capable boat.

The Penobscot 17' is designed as a day cruiser or coastal yacht. It is available in 3 main configurations, yacht, row-boat, or outboard power boat. Naturally all three configurations can be combined.

All materials are of the highest quality including clear Russian Larch veneer faced marine plywood, imported West System marine epoxy resin glues, imported Canadian Douglas Fir stem, old growth Russian Larch stringers, Southeast Asian Teak railings, breasthook, and transom knees, and Luan coamings and rubrails. Rudder and centre-board are of imported German White Oak and Canadian Douglas Fir. Keel is laminated Douglas Fir.

The Penobscot 17 is planked with 6 mm (1/4") marine plywood. The bulkheads are 18mm (3/4") marine plywood; The seats and other parts use 8mm (3/8") and 12mm (1/2") marine plywood. All main joints are fibreglassed re-inforced with Marine epoxy resins and fastenings are stainless steel and silicon bronze screws.

Deck fittings are of the highest quality metals in brass with yacht pulleys of the famous Harken brand.

The Penobscot 17' comes with optional colours in special purpose marine paints by the Dutch company Epifanes, in siliconized alkyd resins. These paints have outstanding weather durability with long lasting gloss retention and are non-yellowing. Three top coats of Epifanes are applied over three undercoats of HT 9000 Marine Epoxy Resin to give a very strong and highly durable finish.

Solid Teak decks are optional, laid with specially formulated glues by Sikaflex. Surface finishing is either Teak oil sealer or varnished. These decks lend a classic air to any yacht and provide a beautiful non-skid surface.

Masts and spars are made by a modern "birdsmouth" routing technique resulting in a hollow construction which retains the original strength properties while resulting in a 30% lighter product. Wood used is imported Douglas Fir chosen for its inherent strength and natural flexibility. Centerboard casing is lined in fiberglass for scratch resistance and waterproofing.

Flotation is built in with forward and stern watertight compartments with access hatches and also by the addition of special strong inflatable tubes made from TPU or PVC material concealed under side decks. These are easily removed for cleaning and drying of the internal areas of the boat.

Optional boat covers are by Powersource Marine with materials by Sunbrella, the choice of discerning boat owners the world over. These materials are waterproof, highly UV resistant and maintain their colours through many years of outside use. Specially designed tent covers and sun hoods can be offered by arrangement.
Fenders made by Polyform for protecting the boat sides while tied to a wharf are supplied as standard along with an anchor and lead rope.

Four oars are also standard equipment and are made from laminated Larch or Douglas Fir and fit in bronze rowlocks also supplied as standard equipment.

Outboard motors for the Penobscot can be supplied and range from 2.5 HP to 25 HP in either two-stroke or four-stroke models. Road trailer can be supplied and is made with special padded wooden beds for launching and recovery along with winch.
