Fexible couplings compromise of 2 equal gear rings meshing with each other and connected through high resistance resilient rubber blocks. Both these gear rings are symmetrical and can effectively transmit torque ( without being flexible ) even without the rubber blocks ( for a short time, in emergencies ).

Flexible couplings offer flexibility between the shafts due to assembly conditions and the rubber blocks cushion the transfer of axial thrusts between the 2 shafts, due to their structural characteristics.
