CATALINA EPS FOAM RC AIRPLANE was was built by Consolidated Aircraft and was used by every branch of the US military as well as the air forces and navies of many other nations. It first flew on March 28, 1935, and at that time the cost was $90, 000.00 per plane. It was produced from 1936-1945, and slightly more then 4, 000 were manufactured. It could be equipped with depth charges, bombs, torpedoes and. 50 caliper Browning machine guns. They were used as search planes, search and rescue planes, patrol bombers, convoy escorts, transports and for antisubmarine warfare. In civilian use they have served as transports, small passenger planes and for fire fighting, and they continue to fly today. The PBY was the most successful plane of its kind and the most produced flying boat.
The motors on the real Catalina were closer together than the ones on the model and had smaller three bladed props. The wing supports were shorter and the wing was closer to the fuselage. There are no floats visible on the wing tips on the Catalina sea planes in the picture because they went up and fitted into the wing during flight, and the floats became the wing tips. My Catalina is "stand off scale" I still very much enjoy its appearance.
