What is Red Clover extract?

Red clover is a member of the legume family – the same class of plants where we find chickpeas and soybeans. Red clover extracts are used as dietary supplements for their high content of isoflavone compounds – which possess weak estrogenic activity and have been associated with a variety of health benefits during menopause (reduction of hot flashes, promotion of heart health and maintenance of bone density).

As a source of plant estrogens, red clover extract can helps maintain a healthy level of estrogen in a woman's body as her own estrogen levels decline in midlife (menopause). Plant estrogens, most commonly found in soy products, are substances present in plants that are able to mimic the effects of estrogens because of similarities in chemical structure. By interacting with estrogen receptors on cellular surfaces, isoflavones compounds are thought to deliver some of the beneficial effects of estrogen (fewer hot flashes, better bone preservation and cardiovascular health) without the potential adverse estrogen side effects (risk of breast and endometrial cancer). No serious adverse side effects are expected with regular use of rd clover extract.
